Housing Transformation Through Design Innovation

Transformative redevelopment of Housing New Zealand’s Auckland portfolio-7% of the city’s residential land-to address aging stock, social stigma, and planning constraints. Using a bold five-part vision and innovative tools like the GIS-based Capacity Modelling Machine and the accessible Simple Guide to design, the team dramatically increased the development capacity of the Auckland portfolio by 40,000 dwellings, improved community integration through blind tenure strategies, and influenced key outcomes in the Auckland Unitary Plan to facilitate the development of world-class urban design, socially inclusive neighbourhoods, and a $4.5 billion uplift in portfolio value-delivering one of New Zealand’s most successful housing transformations.
